It’s an unfortunate situation when you find yourself dealing with a clogged toilet. It’s not something you can regularly schedule on your calendar, as it can happen quite suddenly.
Being able to solve a clogged toilet on your own is just one of the things worth knowing and being prepared for when it comes to indoor home maintenance.
The toilet is used every single day, and sometimes, it gets clogged.
We’ve gathered the best advice on how to handle a clogged toilet as quickly as possible:
Tip 1: Count to 30
Sometimes it takes more than one flush to fix a clogged toilet. Therefore, we recommend that you count to 30 and then try to flush again.
Tip 2: Pour a bucket of water into the toilet
Take a bucket with about 2.5 gallons of water and pour it all into the toilet at once, then flush again.
Sometimes you can mix the water with 0.4 cups of dish soap and let it work for 15-20 minutes. Pour water into the toilet again and repeat the process until the clog is gone.
Avoid using chemicals like chlorine, caustic soda, drain cleaner, or acetic acid as they are bad for you to inhale and can also damage the drain.
Tip 3: Use manual power
If you’re still dealing with a clogged toilet after tip 1 and 2, it’s time to get a plunger and a pair of cleaning gloves. Press the plunger as far down into the toilet bowl as possible and quickly pull it up to make a vacuum. Repeat this until the water level drops to normal.
In the worst case, you may need to remove what is clogging the toilet with your hands. Flush afterwards with a bucket of hot water in the toilet and thoroughly wash your hands.

A clogged toilet can happen due to a number of reasons. We’ve gathered our tips on how to prevent a clogged toilet:
Tip 1: Used paper towels only belong in the trash can
Paper towels don’t dissolve as easily as toilet paper, so if you want to avoid a clogged toilet, throw your paper towels in the trash can instead.
Tip 2: The toilet is not a trash can
The toilet is not a trash can, so diapers, Q-tips, sanitary pads, etc. don’t belong here. If you throw these things into the toilet, there’s a higher risk of a clogged toilet. Instead, use the trash can.
Tip 3: Use the right flush
A good rule of thumb is that the small flush is for number one and the big flush is for when you do number two.
